1.It’s been another odd fashion season, as far as the Autumn/Winter 2021 collections go. New York’s Fashion Week seemed like a drop in the ocean compared to its usual splashy kick-off to the month of shows. A majority of designers opted to present digitally, while some held runway shows without guests. As for the audience, most of us viewed it all in from behind our screens. Personally, it’s been a refreshing change to thoughtfully choose which collections to take in, rather than madly scanning ALL of them for the sake of keeping up. The Ukrainian designer Svetlana Bevza’s namesake label has been a favorite of mine for several years now, ever since her NYFW. This year’s A/W collection, with its skull-hugging balaclavas and medieval silhouettes, was inspired by the 10th-century ruler Olga of Kyiv. Much of it reminded me of the fantastical 1984 film, The Neverending Story, and the strange “Childlike Empress” character—only recast later in life as a powerfully serene and self-possessed, grown-ass woman.
