Magic 8-ball says… Outlook ______(you tell me).

1.

There was a period during my childhood when I was terrified of matches and candles (maybe that had something to do with accidentally setting my bedroom on fire when I was seven…I was my own cautionary tale!), which is ironic considering the number of tea lights, matchboxes, and palo santo sticks currently strewn about my apartment. With less opportunities for going out to restaurants, I’ve leaned—hard—into the ritual of lighting a candle or two at the dinner table, most recently these sculptural twists on your typical tapers.

2.

I’m not trying to hold a crying contest in terms of who’s had it worse during the pandemic. Truthfully the last year has been challenging for every single one of us, in uniquely personal ways, all of it compounded by what’s going on in the world at large. Thaaaaat said, this article on navigating this extraordinarily difficult moment while single really resonated for me, most especially the aspects around the lack of physical contact. Just saying: hug the one you’re with.

3.

I only recently discovered the prolific food writing and recipes from Nigel Slater, and now I want to consume everything of his. His latest book, Greenfeast: Autumn, Winter (a seasonal follow-up to Spring, Summer), is a vegetable-lover’s paean to all the comforting foods one wants this time of year. You guys, there’s a recipe for a milk-infused risotto that he likens to @#$!ing cashmere in a bowl. I also plan on making this or this when I see my parents next week. (Dad, Mom: whoever reads this and responds first gets to choose.)

When is “designer fashion” going to do a collaboration with the classic brand Jockey, with its iconic cotton underwear and logo waistbands??? In the meantime, there’s a handful of other new partnerships I’m pretty excited about: Coach x Champion, TEVA x Anna Sui, and though it’s not a collaboration, I guess you could say that Tokio7, the beloved, long-established East Village institution for some of NYC’s best designer consignment, is finally fist-bumping the Internet. For the first time in 24 years, the shop is now offering e-commerce. (They’re adding inventory by the day, so worthwhile to keep checking!)

5.

My friend Meredith, a fellow “auntie,” passed this beautiful tribute to aunts my way. What I found especially touching: how much it speaks to the love shared amongst siblings. ❤️
