2.Who doesn’t love getting food in the mail? When the pandemic caused significant distribution and supply chain disruptions for farmers and food producers throughout the country, innovative delivery new services burst onto the scene to help make it easier to bring fresh goods to consumers. I recently signed up for Misfits Market which sends out curated boxes of all-organic produce to subscribers on a regular basis, and after choosing the smallest box category (for I am but one person…), still have more produce than I could have imagined—and it’s been two weeks. You can also tack on grocery items like organic nut butters, snacks, canned items, and even dog food with each separate delivery. There’s also Imperfect Foods, which works similarly. As the name suggests, the brand’s underlying mission is to reduce food waste by sending out items that might have cosmetic imperfections, but are otherwise just as good as the pretty stuff. On the more local side, a recent box delivery from Fresh Catskills (which delivers throughout NYC) blew my mind for how fresh and varied the offerings were: peppery, flavorful arugula that actually had some bite to it; a spectacularly lush head of hydroponically-grown gem lettuce, smoked ricotta from Salvatore Brooklyn, organic shiitake mushrooms, Beach Lake Bakery’s nutty, seedy granola, decadent chocolate milk courtesy of Bethel Creamery, and more. Farm to People, another NYC-specific option similarly works with a host of local farms and artisans to supply customizable farm boxes, including my hometown’s Samascott Orchards. And for those living in LA, there’s Flamingo Estate’s CSA organic farmboxes, which can be delivered as one-time purchase, or on a weekly/bi-weekly basis. Even as more shoppers steadily return to their local greenmarkets, I have a feeling these services will continue to thrive as a convenient and very affordable other means of distribution. Good to have options, right? Ok, that was long, but #3 isn’t!
