1. Despite it being one of our limited options for seeing friends these days, I sometimes consider Zoom the Boca Burger of social interactions: the harder it tries to mimic the real thing, the more awkward the outcome (ok, maybe that’s just me). But this weekend I had the funnest time Zooming with Bullets on Broadway, a downloadable Broadway-themed murder mystery that’s designed for video chat platforms. Every player is a character, and any character could the killer…alas, I Julie Tamenomore, the show’s director, was not. There’s a free version available for download too. 2. As kids, my mom used to make us eat breakfast in front of a huge, glowing “Happy Light” on the dark winter mornings to ward off seasonal affective disorder, keep our circadian rhythms steady, and likely torture us a bit, too. After 30-something weeks of self-isolating indoors, I found myself missing that big, dumb hippie box. Brilli’s lightbulbs simulate the brightness of natural daylight and its energy-boosting effects, and make my dark work nook feel a skylit office, minus the cumbersome setup. 3. A new cupboard staple: Dad recently turned me onto this Asian mustard powder after a tear-jerking dumpling feast. I guess parents do know what’s up (and they do like to torture their kids). 4. Our concept of “heroes” has changed profoundly these last few months, and Mattel’s “Thank You Heroes” First Responders collection, comprising 16 different action figures (nurses, doctors, EMTs and delivery drivers), is proof of that. Net proceeds from each sale go towards the #FirstRespondersFirst initiative to supply healthcare workers fighting coronavirus with necessary supplies and equipment, food and accommodations, child care, and mental health support. (Basically, everything the government isn’t doing.) 5. But here’s a supermarket worker who doesn’t take too kindly to the “hero” designation, though. Instead, she suggests the best way to show your respect is by “not showing up at all,” meaning, stay home and shop when it’s only necessary. Ok, gang.
