1. Hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and violet. These were the eight colors comprising the stripes of the first pride rainbow flag, which made its inaugural Pride Day appearance in San Francisco in 1978. Harvey Milk commissioned artist Gilbert Baker to create the design, which has since lost two colors. What I only just learned: Each color symbolized a different theme, one of which included magic. 2. I am a plant murderer. Worse than a missing green thumb, my condition is like the kiss of black death when it comes to plant care. But herein lies the rub: I LOVE the smell of an herb garden. This oil balm from Malin + Goetz containing notes of citrus, rosemary, lavender, rose, and coriander is way more fragrant and satisfying than any windowsill plot I’d inevitably wreck. 3. I’ve been lucky enough to work with photographer Nina Westervelt on several fashion-focused projects for T Magazine and the NY Times. When Covid hit, and most of Nina’s usual projects started to fall by the wayside, she took to the streets like any true-blue documentarian. Her powerful images of nurses, doctors, and other first responders outside hospitals—and even those of average New Yorkers trying to find some normalcy during these strange times—are a striking reminder that while technology allows us to look at so much from our homes, someone still needs to go out into the world to capture it all. 4. Raise your hand if you’ve ever experienced an emotionally painful experience. Ok, now listen to this. The third piece of advice really resonated for me. 5. Last week Isadora brought me to Bar Sardine for the loaded-up lobster and shrimp rolls, but we’d both gladly go back for the gazpacho and street corn. If you can delay your gratification long enough to walk to the west side, I can’t think of a more perfect lunch for a picnic by the water.
