1. If you find yourself placing any last-minute floral delivery orders for mom or anyone else this weekend, this trick might have an immensely transformative effect on your mood: order an additional bunch for yourself (or in my case, a Buunch), and delay your delivery by a week. When your flowers finally arrive, they’ll feel like a thoughtful gift from the universe. It’s a really simple thing, but I did it this week, and man, it felt good. 2. When it comes to pasta, a well-executed version of cacio e pepe is my platonic ideal of a perfect dish, but Samin Nosrat’s riff on the traditional recipe offers a worthwhile double twist of sorts. Her version calls for farro instead of spaghetti-like pasta, but I think this recipe’s true genius lies in its pecorino paste. It’s a snap to make, and also pretty exciting when you think about its other potential uses: drizzled over poached eggs and greens, as a funky companion to roasted cauliflower, or even just on a spoon. And here’s a triple-spin hack that vegans might appreciate: swap the pecorino for nutritional yeast. (I’ll give you a moment to pick your brain bits off the floor.) 3. God, I love the New York Public Library! While it’s become nearly impossible to ignore the distressing number of ambulance sirens on the otherwise silenced streets, the NYPL just released the album, “Missing Sounds of New York.” It’s like Frank Sinatra’s famous tune to the city, only formatted as soothingly familiar, ambient sounds. 4. On Tuesday I joined in on a neighbor’s physically-distant Cinco de Mayo birthday party in our garden. We said ‘cheers’ with margaritas, put away three different kinds of cake, and took turns punting the !@#$ out of a homemade piñata. Then I came home and had a Lifetime-Channel-level meltdown in the bathtub. All this to say: these are strange, emotionally-heightened times, and it’s ok to have a good cry. It might even be good for you. 5. If you’re feeling nostalgic for your pre-quarantine fitness routine, this is NOT that, but so much better. Retrosweat is a wildly entertaining, Jane Fonda-meets-Richard Simmons workout from Australia, with background sets that conjure up all those misty and colorful Lisa Frank designs. To Jodie C. who put this on my radar: I’m getting us matching pairs of old-school, pastel Reeboks with velcro tabs at the ankles. ;) By the way, to all the Brené Brown fans who haven’t listened to her podcast yet…WHUT.
