1. I’ve been freaking out a lot about the current state of the restaurant industry, especially here in New York, where the restaurants are so defining of who we are as New Yorkers. The heartbreaking truth is that a tremendous number won’t survive this pandemic, and the ones that do will be distant cousins of their former selves, with new social distancing guidelines, and other safety parameters to follow. These colorful, cleverly-designed posters by various artists via Indiesigns could help the new normal feel at least a bit less jarring, though (and I’m saying this as someone who does not cope easily with change). I could even see several from the “Wash Your Hands” series winding up on home bathroom walls. 2. The sun is finally showing her brilliant self! But yeah, we’re still mostly indoors. I’ve been taking Vitamin D supplements, and using my energizing, full-spectrum bulbs, but neither has done much for my pale, nearly bioluminescent complexion. A friend recently turned me onto Kosa’s new cream-powder bronzer, and now my skin’s glow has a little more life to it. 3. I have at least four bodegas within two blocks of my apartment, two of which I’m steadfastly loyal to: one for its flower selection, and the other for everything else—and I’m almost always careful not to walk by one with goods visibly procured from the other. Most of us New Yorkers have our favorite neighborhood bodegas, and with so much of the city still under lockdown these days, they feel as essential and treasured as ever. Gabi Lamontagne gets it! Her vivid watercolor illustrations of some of her own favorite spots has me wishing she took commissions. 4. My friend Patrick and I have committed to replacing the phrase, ‘all-day rosé’ with ‘glou les jours’ as our summer drinking maxim. We were especially thinking of gluggable wines in the orange category, but my curiosity has me eyeing Rosé Piscine. This pink provocateur has been a convention-buster of sorts for its radical serving suggestion: with ice. Quel scandale! Apparently the rosé is aromatic enough to remain flavorsome, even as the ice melts. So I guess it’s ideal for those who prefer to glug in extreme heat? Yeah, good luck with those hangovers. 5. If anyone else has been seeing rays of hope flickering through the cracks these days, you’re not delusional, you’re not dumb, and you’re not alone. Here’s a new song and video from a former neighbor and his band, OK Go, with a very poignant letter below, that speaks to the beautiful audacity of this feeling.
